Why do dogs circle before lying down?
Circling can be part of a dog’s normal settling-down routine. A dog may turn around while checking a resting spot and finding a comfortable position. You may also see sniffing, pawing, or rearranging bedding. Several explanations connect these behaviors to inherited nesting or checking habits, but watching one dog circle does not tell us exactly what it is thinking. Context is useful: does the dog settle comfortably after a short routine, or keep pacing and struggling to rest? New or persistent difficulty settling deserves a veterinarian’s assessment. For ordinary curiosity, start by observing the setting and the sequence rather than assigning a single meaning to every movement.
